Definitions:

  1. The ADDM ASD method to determine prevalence includes a review of records by a panel of clinicians who are experts in ASD.
  2. Prevalence is  how commonly a condition occurs in a population.

 

Population of 8-Year-Old Children in Study Area, 2008:

  • 8-Year-Old Children: 2,123
  • White: 42.3%
  • Other race/ethnicity: 56.1%

 

Results:

  • Number of children identified with ASDs: 45
  • Total prevalence of ASDs: 21.2 per 1,000 (1 in 47)
  • Boys: 31.7 per 1,000 (1 in 32)
  • Girls: 11.7 per 1,000 (1 in 85)
  • White: 40.0 per 1,000 (1 in 25)
  • Other race/ethnicity: 6.5 per 1,000 (1 in 154)

  • Children with ASD diagnosis in their records: 69%
  • Median earliest age ASD was documented in their records: 4 years, 5 months
  • Autistic Disorder: 4 years, 4 months
  • ASD/PDD: 4 years, 4 months
